The appeal letter was a striking, firsthand account of the creative director’s meetings with an 11-year old girl. The girl had been raped by two men before coming to the shelter. The team’s decision, and rightfully so, was to celebrate the girl’s life and not use guilt as a persuasion tactic to fundraise. What followed was a spirited illustration of a hopeful future, using girly, “pop culture” colors. The somber tone of the letter made for a strong contrast with the visual.
